City, County, State, & Federal Construction Projects Since 1927

A bridge is a structure built to span physical obstacles such as a body of water, valley, or road, for the purpose of providing passage over the obstacle. Designs of bridges vary depending on the function of the bridge, the nature of the terrain where the bridge is constructed, the material used to make it and the funds available to build it.

In 1998, Christensen Brothers, Inc. worked on the Okoboji Causeway Bridge and Reconstruction, for which they were awarded the Iowa Quality Initiative Structures Award in 1999, and were co-awardees of the NPHQ Achievement Award, presented in 2001. A few years later, in 2003, they worked on the 2003 Roca Spur Conductive Concrete Bridge, an electric bridge that melts snow. This was built in cooperation with NDOR and the University of Nebraska Engineering School. For this they earned the ACI, Nebraska chapter award for excellence in Concrete Construction, 2003. The following year, the company worked on the Niobrara River Bridge at Spencer, Nebraska. This structure was hailed as having the longest steel span in the state at the time. Recently, they worked on an innovative, newly designed arch bridge – Ravenna Viaduct, Ravenna, Nebraska. It is a one-of-a-kind construction that utilizes high-strength steel with high-performance concrete and post-tensioning techniques. The garnered the company the prestigious NDOR/AGC Bridge Award for 2006.

Beam - The beam type is the simplest type of bridge. The beam bridge could be anything as simple as a plank of wood to a complex structure. It is made of two or more supports which hold up a beam.

Arch - In the arch type of bridge, weight is carried outward along two paths, curving toward the ground.

Suspension/Cable-stayed - The deck (trafficway) of a suspension bridge is hung by cables which hang from towers. The cables transfer the weight to the towers, which transfer the weight to the ground. Cable-stayed bridges have towers, but cables from the towers go directly to the road deck, instead of spanning from tower to tower.

Cantilever - In the cantilever type of bridge, two beams support another beam, which is where the deck or trafficway is. The two beams must be anchored, and this must be done well.
